Speech & Swallow

Restoring the Ability to Eat, Communicate and Connect With the World

Speech, language and swallowing are deeply connected to independence and quality of life. After a stroke, brain injury or other neurological condition, a person may lose the ability to eat safely, speak clearly, understand language or communicate their needs. At Newro Rehab, our specialised speech and swallow therapists work closely with the medical team to restore these essential functions and help patients reconnect with everyday life.

How Speech & Swallow supports recovery

01

Because Communication Means Connection

Communication is much more than speaking words. It allows a person to tell their family what they need, express pain or discomfort, share their thoughts, make decisions and reconnect with the people around them. Following neurological injury, a person may know exactly what they want to say but be unable to express it, or may struggle to understand what others are saying. Our speech and language rehabilitation focuses on restoring meaningful communication and helping patients reconnect with the people and world around them.

02

Restoring Safe Swallowing

Swallowing is a complex function requiring precise coordination between the brain, nerves, muscles and airway. Neurological conditions can affect this process, making eating and drinking difficult or unsafe. Patients may cough while eating, struggle with liquids, have difficulty initiating a swallow or remain dependent on alternative feeding. Our specialised swallow therapists, working closely with the medical team, assess these difficulties and develop an appropriate rehabilitation pathway. The goal is not simply to swallow, but to make swallowing as safe, effective and functional as possible.

03

Advanced Assessment with FEES & MBSS

Understanding exactly what is happening during swallowing is essential for making informed rehabilitation and feeding decisions. When clinically indicated, our team uses advanced assessments such as Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) and Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBSS). These assessments provide valuable information about swallowing safety, function and the factors affecting the patient’s ability to eat and drink. With better clinical understanding comes more targeted rehabilitation and a clearer pathway towards recovery.

04

From Tracheostomy to Natural Eating and Communication

For patients with tracheostomies, recovery involves more than simply removing the tube. Swallowing, airway protection, secretion management, breathing and communication may all need to improve before safe removal is possible. Our specialised swallow therapists and medical team work together to support suitable patients through this important stage. Tracheostomy removal can become a powerful milestone—a step towards eating, communicating, breathing and participating more naturally in everyday life.

05

Restoring Language, Voice & Speech

Neurological injury can affect every aspect of communication. A patient may struggle to find words, understand language, form sentences, produce a clear voice or coordinate the movements required for speech. Our specialised therapists work on these individual difficulties and progressively connect them to meaningful communication. The goal is not simply clearer speech—it is helping patients express what they think, feel and need, and giving them greater ability to participate in conversations and everyday life.

06

Cognitive-Communication

Effective communication depends on much more than the ability to speak. Attention, memory, processing speed, organisation, reasoning and executive functions all influence how we understand and participate in conversations. Following neurological injury, patients may lose track of conversations, forget information, struggle to organise their thoughts or have difficulty responding appropriately. Our speech and swallow therapists work with the wider rehabilitation team when required to address these challenges. By connecting communication and cognition, we help patients become more effective participants in their everyday world.

07

Coma Stimulation & Neuro Activation

For patients with severely reduced consciousness, conventional communication-based therapy may not yet be possible. Rehabilitation can still begin. As part of Newro’s Neuro Activation Block (NAB), our speech and swallow team contributes to structured stimulation and observation alongside the wider medical and rehabilitation team. The focus is on creating opportunities for neurological response and recognising meaningful changes as they emerge. When a patient cannot yet communicate with us, we remain attentive to every possible sign that they are beginning to reconnect.

08

Expertise That Makes a Difference

Swallowing and communication difficulties can be among the most complex consequences of neurological injury. They require specialised knowledge, careful assessment and experience in understanding subtle changes in function. Our speech and swallow therapists work closely with the medical team and wider rehabilitation departments, ensuring that treatment is connected to the patient’s complete recovery journey. From the first response to the first word, the first swallow to the first meal, our focus remains on helping patients regain meaningful function and quality of life.
